The Internet received a huge boost in the early to mid-2000s with the development of DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) technology. The essence of this technology is to transmit a digital signal at rather high speeds via a telephone line, and taking into account the fact that in many developed and developing countries there was a telephone in almost every house, it was enough for the telecom operator to install additional equipment on the communication center and modem on subscriber side. However, this technology has a huge minus – the maximum data transfer rate (meaning the total, i.e., both to the subscriber and from him).
It depends on the quality of the cable going from the communication center to the subscriber. I would like to recall that at that time there was no need for subscribers to upload a large amount of information to the network, but rather, on the contrary, subscribers downloaded a lot from the network (downloading various films, games, etc.), ADSL technology, i.e. Asymmetrical Digital, became relevant Subscriber Line, where the speed for downloading a file by a subscriber was several times higher than the transmission speed from a subscriber to the network. Thus, the operator did not need to replace cable lines that already could not cope with that amount of data, but it was enough just to give subscribers more incoming speed than outgoing speed, the total data throughput in this channel remained unchanged. This allowed operators to save time and money on replacing cable lines.
But at the moment, the situation has changed dramatically – we began to send files, photos and videos in instant messengers and social networks (Instagram, Facebook, Tick Tok), began to use video communication (Skype, WhatsApp, Viber), conduct online conferences, etc., which led to the needs of users not only to download a lot from the network, but also to transfer information through the network to other users.
And if you use a non-symmetrical channel, then media files will be sent much longer, because the transmission speed is many times lower. It also affects the quality of uploaded media files and the quality of communication in general.
With a symmetrical Internet channel, the speed of information transfer in both directions is the same, which allows users to easily exchange large amounts of information with each other.
In many countries, most of the users use a symmetric Internet channel, while in Cyprus, we are just starting to get acquainted with this technology.
